Giovanni Bertelli was born in Verona, Italy. He studied piano and composition at the conservatory of his hometown, graduating respectively in 2003 and 2007. In 2004 he graduated in Philosophy at Verona University.
In 2007 he won the second prize at Valentino Bucchi competition in Rome, in 2008 he is between the finalists of Alea III competition in Boston.
From 2008 to 2010 he studied with Stefano Gervasoni at Paris' Conservatoire National Supérieur (CNSDMP). In 2010 he is chosen for Cursus I at Ircam, where he came back the next year for Cursus II. He is currently a PhD candidate for the SACRe program at PSL Research university in Paris. His research, supervised by Marc Battier and Frédéric Durieux, concerns the theatrical potential of performers physical gestures.
In 2016 he has been composer in residence of Divertimento Ensemble, after this experience, a monographic cd will be released in 2017.

Bertelli received commissions by institutions such as Biennale di Venezia, Radio France, Musik der Jahrhunderte, Divertimento Ensemble, Ascolta ensemble and Avam. His music has been performed by ensembles including Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Arditti quartet, Court-Circuit, Divertimento, Ascolta, Bit20, Contemporary Alpha in festivals like Ircam Manifeste, MATA, Biennale di Venezia, Sommer in Stuttgart, Rondò Milano etc.
