Spectres d’ombre explores the interactions between Souffle (air as a movement), gesture and resonance. The use of the instruments’ bodies - “reinforced” here by a micro-tonal tuning of the strings - allows multiple spectral/harmonic combinations to create complex textures made of souffle, frequencies, air, resonance... The work also explores the "choreographic" impact of extended techniques. Two "cadenza" (cello and piano) develop spectacular "double gestures": pizzicati in front and behind the fingers, playing with the opening and closing of the keyboard cover. Souffle is ultimately developed towards a vocal-instrumental dialogue in which sounds and voices are merged. As the work ends, the silent gestures of the performers remain the only element.
This work was awarded the 2017 “Prix André Jolivet” and selected for the 2018 ISCM world music days (French section).
