The concept that music acts as a liquid substance characterizes this piece. The harmony of the first part is based on one single pitch. As the harmony moves on, it "bends" around the pitch to create a sense of uncertainty and the absence of a base. (I think of this piece as "hanging" rather than "sitting.")
The texture keeps on changing: Loud and sudden attacks interrupt the fluidity of the piece and allow the harmony to make powerful statements that include all parts of the register. Later, the music becomes denser in both rhythm and register. It moves climactically towards a point where is again interrupted by contrasting soft and long notes that allow the piece to breathe.
