Notes on this piece
Blue Notes has no score, the instrumental parts are played independently. No barlines and no tempo is indicated. The performers need to find a common breathing, a common flow, not a common pulse. There are only two meeting points, where the performers gather, keeps their figure, until a cue triggers them to continue. This construction defines also the harmony. The "Blue notes" (from the blues scale), transforms, another note gets to be the blue note, which mutates the scale. Since the parts aren't synchronized, different blue notes overlap, and different blues scale-like figures float into each other. This gives the piece its momentum, its movement forward. Like a constant crossfading between a lake and another, each lake containing different "blue notes", and different implied roots (present or not).
