Notes on this piece
Around the Blue-S
"Around the Blue-s" is a piece was premiered by BlueWater Chamber Orchestra from Cleveland, Oh, USA and is dedicated to that orchestra. This piece is commissioned as a part of the the Iron Composer's Award. In this composition, a musical palette of blue colors is explored, as suggested by the letter "s" at the end of the title. "S" also stands for space, sound, speech, and many other meanings conjured by the music. There are a total of seven sections in this piece, signifying seven different blue spaces. These abstract spaces are achieved by the dispersed position of the players throughout the concert-hall, and also by the blue chords derived from superimposing consonances (thirds, fourth, fifths, sixths, and octaves). Furthermore, the central axis of this piece is around Eb (Es), which is the emphasized note for the beginning and ending sections. At the end of this piece, only the brass trio remains with the trumpet solo in blues scale, which is reminiscent of the "Finding You" - the winning piece for the Brass Trio for the Iron Composer Competition 2013.
