The Turkish word “devinim” means precession and is often used to explain movements of heavenly bodies. The piece is based on a short, two measure motif which is inspired by the melodic aestethic of American minimalism as well as 1980’s jazz fusion. The piece starts with this motif played on the electric guitar for two measures, afterwards, a transformative process takes over which reflects the meaning of the title of the piece. The technique of “change ringing,” borrowed from the art of varying the sounding order of church bells. This is achieved by compartmentalizing the two measure motif into 21 cells and randomly varying their order to create the sense of an ever changing movement. The second half of the piece takes a different approach to interpreting this two measure motif by dissecting harmonies and microtones from the upper partials from the first half and presenting in a more fluid, viscous and sentimental manner.
