Notes on this piece

Musiuum Opus

For string quartet

In Latin, the term "musiuum opus" or "musiuum" in a shortened form, first designated the mosaics which adorned caves or fountains. The word was then used to refer to mural mosaics and later to the technique in general.

This one-piece work is 12 minutes long and it is based on a sequence of interval pedals from which emerges a dense and ceaseless contrapuntal flow. Beyond this apparent apprehension, the intertwining of lines tends to create a more profound perspective. At the same time, the density of the piece invites the listener to "let go" and get lost in its never-ending shimmering, as one would do by staring at a mosaic.

Although this piece is devoid of romantic or expressionist vibrations, it does present a few lyric impulses.

Musiuum for string quartet was composed in 1996 and played in 1998 by the Alizée String Quartet (enclosed recording). At that time, the difficult execution of this piece, due in particular to the numerous changes in tempo had required the presence of a conductor. In 2018, the first violinist of the Leonis String Quartet took the responsibility of this aspect, which contributes to the virtuosity of this work.
