Au-delà du visible

for string quartet

In 2011 the Diotima Quartet, one of the most important string quartets today, asked me to write a piece for them. The quality of these musicians allowed me to explore the world of strings through different densities, through the dynamics, the use of natural and artificial harmonics, and above all, handling the string quartet as if it were a single instrument and at the same time unfolding each of them in several voices in order to achieve an almost orchestral sound.

The title “Beyond the visible” refers to the sudden death of my friend and teacher Daniel Catán in 2011. This quartet is dedicated to him.

Au-delà du visible was commissioned by the Diotima Quartet and the Louvre Museum with the support of the National System of Art Creators and premiered in 2011 at the Louvre Museum.
