Notes on this piece
ENCORE IV (Benjamin Britten, in memoriam) for celloCarme – Recitativo – CapriccioDate of composition, December 2005First performanceJanuary 26, 2006Ljubljana, Radio Slovenia, studio 14Tomaž Sever, cello

Encore IV has been commissioned by Greek Composers’ Union and is dedicated to the cellist Nina Vangelis and to the composer Theodore Antoniou. It belongs to a group of compositions, mostly for solo instrument, each one being homage to a great performer. The piece is also in memory of Benjamin Britten, whose cello “Suite I” op.72 fascinated me particularly since first listening. Two short fragments and a memory from “Canto primo” and “Bordone” are mentioned along the piece - divided in three panels: Carme / Recitativo / Capriccio – as to make clear, for me, the will to put Encore IV inside the ordinary outline of the instrumental western string music tradition.
