Upstream

Upstream deals with stillness, staticity, musical material that aims to come together but keep on surpassing each other (missed communication), as well as most delicate and unstable sounds. As the piece progresses, static electric sounds are unearthed as the natural sounds of a flowing river.

The piece was commissioned by Orkest de Ereprijs, especially for the Aardlek concert series, concerned with art and its response to climate change and other urgent matters.
