Notes on this piece Qiwu (Chinese: 漆吳) was a mountain depicted in the ancient Chinese classic Shan Hai Jing (Chinese: 山海經, or literally "The Classic of Mountains and Seas"), located in East China Sea. As the classic compilation which may have existed since the 4th century BC, of geography and myth depicts, Mount Qiwu had no plants, but many giant rocks in various shapes. On top of the mountain, one could see where the sun rested. As the sun rose, the mountain was enshrouded in the steaming brine and flickering lights. Scarcely do one find such scenery descriptions in the book, and this inspired the composer’s imagination of natural views and human life in this far ancient myth.
