O

“O” for solo piano is the first and fundamental piece of a larger cycle of compositions with different instrumentation. The title “O” refers to it’s function in the cycle - the origin in terms of material, structure and form. Graphically the letter is a cycle and that is also the form of the whole piece, it ends where it begins and it could be theoretically played endlessly. 

The basic idea behind this piece is a constant process of time reduction between impulses, creating always shorter and faster gestures until they become impulses again. The sonic material shifts form very fragile, transparent and soft to complex, excessive and dynamic.

In the piece “O” I look at the exposed musical elements from different acoustic perspectives whose process is self-enclosed. I examine, extend and create new merits out of theses elements in the following compositions of the whole cycle. Similar to the chaining of their titles (O OI IOI) I slowly create a new quality - changing the meaning of a single letter to a hidden information in a fragment of a binary code.
