Notes on this piece
L’Oeil is an attempt to bring the saxophone closer to vocality through the gestural, sensual aspects of the word. The prelinguistic dimension of the latter is of interest, a limit zone where gesture, eroticism and sign meet: a bordering space of the unintelligible, with silence as a backdrop.
A text by the author, inspired by some erotic images present in the work of the writer George Bataille, which appears perceptibly on rare occasions, serves as a support for this work.
The quartet has been conceived as an open space to be explored, through an imaginary axis defined by two extreme situations: maximum dispersion, maximum fusion. In this framework, the situation of the quartet is traversed by the transitory and the fleeting. Other models, such as the exploration of space and the song-game “Katajjaq” (Inuit tradition, Canada) provide musical situations far from the traditional relationships of autonomy, balance and polyphony typical of the quartet.
This work would be impossible without the intense collaboration maintained with the Sigma Project saxophone quartet, which assumes the risk of a construction of the work in common, of sharing the experimentation with the composer in aspects such as the work on the instrumental gesture and the exploration on the musical notation of it.
