Notes on this piece
pedale traverso is constructed around contrasting notions of a musical “ground.” In baroque music, “ground” is a English term for an ostinato in the bass part. The chaconne and passacaglia are well-known dances “on a ground,” but the term can also refer to the fixed patterns of another baroque dance, the folia. While baroque composers rarely wrote “ground” music for solo melodic instruments, in the 20th century chaconnes and passacaglias appear frequently in solo instrumental works.

Taking up the paradox of “ground” music for a high, solo instrument, I centered pedale traverso around the less-frequent folia, pairing it with another, very different musical “ground”: the melody patterns of the nohkan flute, the only melodic instrument used in the music of Japanese Nō theater. In two of the four movements of pedale traverso, I have brought the baroque folia and Nō dance into direct dialogue, via the juxtaposition of instrumental and electronic transformations of their respective “grounds.”
