Like the skin of animals, the bark of trees and other woody plants comprises their first layer of contact with their surroundings. It is both a barrier and a receiver, as well as the initial sensuous encounter for most of us when we touch a tree. Bark protects trees from predators and environmental conditions and, like trees themselves, it comes in a myriad of shapes, colors, and particularities.
un lenguaje hecho de células (“a language made from cells”) is based on the intricate textures of the bark of different species of trees. The work’s raw material stems from a—subjective and imaginative— sonification of various types of tree bark. These initial musical materials are developed and transformed bearing in mind the patterns of growth and variation in the bark of each species of tree.
