Alexis Porfiriadis is a composer, pianist and improviser. Since 2008 he composes mainly open form scores using verbal and/or graphic notation or combinations of conventional, graphic and verbal notation, that encourage collaboration and collective decisions between the performers. His PhD research was also investigating the mechanisms of decision making in music groups.
 
His music has been played in concerts and festivals in Europe, U.S.A. and Canada.  He has worked as a composer with Snim Ensemble for improvised Music Vienna, Ensemble Wiener Collage, Ensemble x.y/U.K., MotoContrario Ensemble/Italy, The extradition series Portland/U.S.A., 113 Composers Collective/U.S.A.,   InEnsemble/Russia, 6daEXIt Improvisation Ensemble Thessaloniki, WHI ensemble Athens, Molinari Quartet Montreal/Canada, Ensemble Dissonart Thessaloniki,  ARS MUSICANDUM Sax-Quartet/Spain, Vocalsolisten Graz, Ensemble Ensuite Graz. As a performer Alexis performs regularly with 6daEXIt Improvisation Ensemble and WHI ensemble. He has also performed together with a large number of improvisers in Greece, Serbia and Austria.
 
Alexis studied Composition in Bath Spa University/UK (PhD, 2016, supervised by James Saunders). He also studied Composition with Gerd Kühr (MA, 2002), Beat Furrer (Postgraduate, 2004) and Mathias Spahlinger (Klangwege 2003) in University for Music and Performing Arts Graz/Austria.
 
Selected prizes and awards include: 1st Prize in the Franco Evangelisti International Composition Competition Rome/Italy, 3d Prize in the Second International Composition Competition for String Quartet by Molinari Quartet (Montreal/Canada), the Music Promotion Prize of the City of Graz/Austria, the annual Austrian State grand for Composition, the Scholarship for special academic achievements of the Austrian Ministry of Science and Culture, the Carl Michael Ziehrer Trust Scholarship (Vienna/Austria). and the Scholarship for special academic achievements of the Austrian Ministry of Science and Culture.
 
He has taught Music Theory, Composition and Improvisation in academic and non-academic contexts.  He has presented papers on improvisation, notation, aesthetics and composition techniques in conferences and symposiums in Greece, UK and Cyprus. In 2007 he co-founded the 6daEXIt Improvisation Ensemble which is been considered the longest-living improvisation group in Greece. He also co-founded the WHI ensemble Athens and the art group Music Is Network.
