Peter Gahn was born 1970 in Münster (Germany) and grew up in Düsseldorf. He studied composition at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen (1991-1996) with Nicolaus A. Huber and Ludger Brümmer, and at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (1997-2001) with Jo Kondo. From 2001 to 2005 he worked in Tokyo as composer and lecturer (Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, Senzoku College of Music, etc.) As of 2005 he continued his work as a composer in Germany. Gahn has received scholarships from DAAD (1997-1999) and the Japanese Ministry of Culture (1997-2001), the 26th Irino Prize 2005, 2005/06 ZKM Karlsruhe artist-in-residence, 2009 a residence scholarship for Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, 2010 artist-in-residence at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon and 2013 the first prize of Stuttgarter Kompositionspreis. The variety of his works includes solo and chamber music, works for choir and orchestra, electronic music, as well as collaborations with video art, Noh Theatre, Peking Opera and contemporary dance. Gahn\'s works have been shortlisted and presented at ICMC 1996 in Hong Kong, at ISCM World Music Days 2001 in Yokohama, at 2004 GNM Ensemble Modern Nachwuchsforum in Frankfurt/Berlin, at MaerzMusik/Berliner Festspiele 2006, at Gaudeamus International Music Week 2007 in Amsterdam and at Ultraschall Festival Berlin 2009. His music has been played by the Ensemble Phoenix Basel, the Ensemble Nomad Tokyo, the Ensemble Modern, the ensemble on_line vienna, the Ensemble Insomnio Utrecht, the ensemble courage Dresden and the ensemble MusikFabrik.
