Mauricio Dottori

Mauricio Dottori is an Italo-Brazilian composer based today in Bologna. He has studied clarinet with José Botelho in his native Rio de Janeiro and, then, composition with Sylvano Bussotti and Mauro Castellano at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. Thereafter he received a Master in Arts degree at the Universidade de São Paulo, and a PhD in Music at the University of Wales, Cardiff. He was Full Professor of Composition and Electroacoustics at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. There he formed a generation of composers who are now spread all over the world.
Dottori’s music has been played in concerts and festivals in Brazil, Europe and the Americas. He has received several composition prizes, chiefly the Brazilian National Arts Foundation Biennial Composition Prize in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, for orchestral music and for a variety of chamber music ensembles. Since 1999 he has been the director of the Nova Camerata, a contemporary music ensemble in Curitiba, Brazil.
Along with his career as a composer, Dottori has researched in Music Theory and Musicology (on eighteenth-century Neapolitan and Brazilian music, on Modernist music, and on the cognition of music). He was a founding member and President of the Brazilian Association of Cognition and Music. His most recently published book is The night, the music: essays on philosophy and musical creation.
