Notes on this piece
Caught in the Glare is a mixed media work scored for alto saxophone and prerecorded electronic sounds that was realized in Heifetz's home studio in 2002-2003.  The digital sounds were generated using REplayPLAYer 3.1 software and processed with GRM Tools.  The score utilized both proportional and graphic notational systems, aleatory techniques as well as theatrical elements, all features rather typical of the composerÕs recent approach to music-making which attempts to display a genuine lyricism for the saxophone of a highly personal nature while inhabiting simultaneously, in a completely natural manner, the often violent events crashing in around it, thereby creating a near-hallucinatory sonic environment.  The work was premiered during the World Saxophone Congress XIII at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis in 2003 with Griffin Campbell on saxophone who commissioned the work.  Subsequent performances were at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California the following year, one at the Eugene Coleman Savidge Library of The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 2008 during his third MacDowell residency fellowship, and its first broadcast in 2005 on art@radio in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  It appeared on the Soundcarrier Music two-CD release of Out of Kilter in 2014.  The duration is 10:37.
