Notes on this piece

Piece composed for the "Chevillion-Bonnaud Prize" in the 13th Concours International de Piano d'Orléans.

The title Natura viva con glissandi [living nature/life with glissandos] comes from a typically title in painting, for paintings depicting fruits and flowers, rooted out and separated from their plant or the ground, or dead animals: Still life (with...).
Contrary to that, the "depicted" sounds in a music score have a potentially infinite life, revived and materialized every time they are transformed into vibrations by interpreters.

This piece is the continuation of a cycle of three duo pieces for strings (violin, viola, cello) and piano. The original core is a musical and instrumental gesture: the glissando.
In this work I directed my attention to the concrete dimension of the sound, from the double point of view of the production and the perception of it. I focused on the inner nature of the piano, as a means to generate sounds and, consequently, on the nature of the actions employed on this instrument.
Specifically, I tried to obtain the perception of the continuity in the change of a pitch, as sliding from a pitch to another without the natural discontinuity in the piano because of the discrete subdivision by the keys of its pitch range.

I went deep in the physical dimension of the instrument, to reinvent and modulat the way of production of the sound. For that, I was guided continuously by an idea of temporal development of the sound, that is an idea of "life" of the sound.
