Notes sur cette pièce
The praxinoscope was an early animation device. A strip of pictures was placed around the inner surface of a spinning cylinder, which contained an inner circle of mirrors. When the cylinder was spun, a viewer would see the pictures' reflection in rapid succession, producing the illusion of motion.
This piece presents its germinal material at the outset in rapid, stratified, seemingly random still-frames, like the separate pictures in a praxinoscope at rest. The remainder of the piece is a spinning-out of this material.
Because the word praxinoscope translates roughly as “action-viewer”, the listener is challenged to remember all of the initial material as the piece progresses. A lot of the early animations produced for the praxinoscope featured dancing characters, so this music tends to have a dance-like quality throughout. Also, like an old machine, the form starts slowly,
and then goes awry near the end.
