The piece springs from a reflection on the human, the performer, who is here considered as an instrument himself. With his/her gestures, breathings and voice, the performer acts as an extension of his/her instrument. The piece explores souffle - air and breath - as a physical and acoustic material. Through souffle, the work aims to introduce a reflection on nothingness, and infinity.
This work was commissioned by Museum Ettore Fico and Estovest New Music Festival (Turin). It was recorded by NEXT (New Ensemble Xenia Turin) and broadcasted through the Museum Ettore Fico (October 2016 - January 2017). In this context, the piece was designed for a cyclic diffusion (every cycle lasts 24 minutes) and conceived to interact with the space and the audience/visitor’s path.
This string quartet is also (and primarily) conceived as a concert work and designed for a live performance. Physical and acoustic elements such as silence, gestures, air, breath, vibration and resonance play a major role; the instrumental “choreography” is a full part of the audience experience. Through live diffusion, specifically placed microphones enhance the instruments’ most underlying sounds and amplify the performer’s voices, gestures and breathings.
