Mateu Malondra Flaquer [b. 1977: Palma de Mallorca, Illes Balears, Spain]
In 1999 Mateu Malondra moved to Barcelona where he received guitar lessons as student of Sadahiro Otani. During this period, Christian de Jong and David Padrós introduced him to composition studies. In 2004 he moved to Maastricht where he studied Bachelor and Master in Music Composition at Maastricht Conservatory under the guidance of Robert HP Platz and from where he graduated with distinction. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in guitar performing from Den Haag Royal Conservatoire where he studied as soloist and chamber music with EnnoVoorhorst. As part of his composition curriculum, Malondra Flaquer, did an electronic music course with Patrick Delges and, in 2010, a residency program with Jean-Marc Sullon at Centre Henri Pousseur (Liège). In addition to his academic studies he has attended master classes with Daniel D’Adamo, Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer, Wolfgang Rihm, and Edwin Roxburg. Mateu Malondra is currently a PhD candidate at Kingston University-London under the tutelage of Paul Archbold.
He has been the recipient of several grants and awards like “MusicaSacra Maastricht”, Cultural Council of East Iceland, Encontre de compositors-Illes Balears-2007, Intro-insitu, Music Village 2011, Institud Ramon Llull, First price GTM-Conservatoria Symfonieorkest, selected work at the Arditti Quartet International call for new works 2010-Kingston University, finalist at the ICP 2010, selected work at Donaueschinger Musiktage-Next Generation 2011, selected work at the Arditti Quartet International call for new works for sting quartet 2012-IMR. Award winner at the PluralEnsemble competition 2012-2013 concert tour.
Malondra Flaquer has had the fortune of working with musicians such as Arditti String Quartet, Bcn216, Ensemble dissonArt, Ensemble Exposé, Mdi Ensemble, GTM-Conservatoria Symfonieorkest, Studium Chorale, ICP ensemble, Imsomnio, Nexeduet, Els Crommen, Joanna Czaj, Angelique van Durling, Svanur Vilbergsson and conductors such as Gerry Cornelius, Beat Furrer, Andrés Gomis, Yasuaki Itakura, Taco Kooistra, Hans Leenders, Robert HP Platz, Ulrich Pöhl, Roger Redgate, José María Sánchez Verdú and Michel Tabachnik.
His music has been performed in such forums as Cairo Contemporary Music Days, Dark Music Days-Iceland, Donaueschinger Musiktage-Off program, Encontre Internacional de Compositors, Festival Antoni Lliteres, Festival Musica Sacra Maastricht, IDAF Festival-London, Nact der neuen Musik-Düsseldorf, Sounds New, and in such halls as L'Auditori-Barcelona, Conzertzaal Tilburg, Konzertsal-Trossingen, Theater ann het Vrijthof, Muziekcentrum First Philips, Concertgebouw Brugge, Teatre Principal, Auditorium Bizet Dunkerque, St.Gregory’s center of Music-Canterbury. His works have been broadcasted by Netherlands national Radio-4.. Writings about Malondra’s work includes: an essay by Anemone van Zijl published at STT-Den Haag of the electro-acoustic installation Detaching/Pandemonium and a short commentary of Aankomst published at the Spanish online magazine Sul Ponticello. A short sampler of Aankomst was included in the official video of the festival Donaueschinger Musiktage 2011. Future performances will be taken place at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, L’Auditori-Barcelona, Auditorio de Saragossa and Seville.

Recent projects included a Violin Concerto for GTM-Conservatoria Symfonieorkest and commissions for contemporary music specialist such as: Ensemble Bcn216, Ensemble dissonArt, Sonodualis, Llüisa Espigolé, Trio Atem and Sylvia Hinz-The bewitched project.
Malondra’s pieces have been performed in Egypt, around Europe, Iceland and the UK.
