José-Luis Hurtado was born in Mexico in 1975. His music has been performed worldwide by ensembles and soloists such as The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Jack Quartet, International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea Ensemble, Quatuor Molinari, Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien, Tony Arnold, Garth Knox, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and the Arditti Quartet among many others.
He has been the recipient of the Kompositionspreis der Stadt Wolkersdorf (Austria), the Harvard University Green Prize for Excellence in Composition (USA), the Rodolfo Halffter Ibero-American Composition Prize (Mexico), the Julián Carrillo Composition Prize (Mexico), Regional Winner of the National SCI/ASCAP Composition Competition (USA) and 2nd prize in the Troisieme Concours International de Composition du Quatuor Molinari (Canada).
In addition to his compositional career, he is highly active as a pianist and new music advocate. He is the pianist of Nueva Música Dúo (Contemporary Vn & Pno duo), founding member of áltaVoz (Latin-American composers collaborative in the U.S), and former director of The Harvard Group for New Music.
Hurtado holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University where he studied under Mario Davidovsky, Chaya Czernowin, Magnus Lindberg, Brian Ferneyhough and Helmut Lachenmann.
He is currently Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition at the University of New Mexico.

Su música ha sido interpretada alrededor del mundo por intérpretes como The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Jack Quartet, International Contemporary Ensemble, Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien, Tony Arnold, Garth Knox, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne y el Cuarteto Arditti entre muchos otros.
Ha sido merecedor de diversos premios como Kompositionspreis der Stadt Wolkersdorf (Austria), Harvard University Green Prize for Excellence in Composition (EEUU), Premio Iberoamericano de Composición Rodolfo Halffter (México), Premio de Composición Musical Julián Carrillo (México), ganador regional del National SCI/ASCAP Composition Competition (EEUU), y 2do lugar en el Troisieme Concours International de composition du Quatuor Molinari (Quebec).
Además de su carrerar como compositor, mantiene una intense actividad como promotor y pianista de música nueva. Es pianista de Nueva Música Dúo (ensamble de violín y piano dedicado a la interpretación de música nueva), miembro fundador de áltaVoz (Consorcio de compositores Latinoamericanos establecido en los EEUU) y exdirector de The Harvard Group for New Music.
Hurtado es Doctor por la Universidad de Harvard donde estudió composición bajo la guía de Mario Davidovsky, Chaya Czernowin, Magnus Lindberg. Brian Ferneyhough y Helmut Lachenmann.
Actualmente es Profesor de teoría y composición en la Universidad de Nuevo México en los Estados Unidos.
