Notes sur cette pièce
“Erratischer Block” is the result of a long lasting analysis of the instruments of alpine folk music. In the present composition, LPs with recordings of early twentieth century music from Bavaria and Lower Austria play an essential role. The found historic recordings serve as sonorous “objets trouvés”, which I approach in an archaeological way. With the help of electronic tools, certain frequency levels and sound characteristics were laid open before the dissected material was combined to a new topography and taken up by the ensemble. What is audible is a compositionally outfolded reception history, in which the instruments literally work themselves off on various “erratic blocks”.My compositional approach to this music is therefore primarily a uniquely tonal and abstract one. In the sound particles from the tape a very complex (music) history is always present in the background, due to the natural recognizability of the sound particles. Just in those parts, where I confront the listener with untreated original material, after having led him there slowly, each listener can examine his own listening experience and personal attitude towards this music considered to be traditional. This process is being different from person to person and therefore constitutes a formal risk for the composition. It was very important to me to work with those unpredictable processes and try to deal with them as good as possible. The confrontation between the apparently well-known and unknown, strangeness and proximity is also reflected in the combination between the zither and the other instruments. This way, one element works as an erratic block in the world of the other and vice versa and might change our point of view.
