The Genealogy of the “Being” Pieces

Being 

On a poem by Georges Bataille called “God” in which Bataille states that “if God knew he was God he would cease to be God. Therefore God is a-theist, profoundly so.” For SATB mixed chorus, a capella. (Los Angeles, CA. 2004). 

Being Mirror

The Bataille text is hidden with only a few fragments left due to the general impossibleness of choral ensembles worldwide. For men’s chorus and chamber ensemble. (Palo Alto, CA. 2014).

Prayer 

As the third movement of the cello symphony The Art of Imaginal Listening. Bataille’s text is renounced, the chorus reduced to syllables. For women’s chorus and orchestra. (Clarence Center, N.Y. 2014). 

Lost Prayer 

Since the text cannot be revealed, the Prayer is lost. The choral element is renounced completely. For string orchestra or string quintet. (Clarence Center, N.Y. 2016). 

Lost Prayer2 

Expanding on all the possible choral and instrumental timbres, the cycle continues for wind instruments. For concert wind band. (Columbus, OH. 2019). 

Being3 

The last work in the cycle for a solo player, completes the project ending in agnosis. For solo violin. (Columbus, OH. 2021).
