Earth: Night forest (from the pale earth book of darkening days)

Earth: Night Forest is the second work in a cycle of chamber pieces where I take inspiration from nature in my own, distinct way. The piece begins with a particular thought or image, and as the music emerges it becomes a world of its own, independent of any extra-musical associations. I use instrumental colors and effects to build out a mosaic of textural and perceptual gestures. If the listener has never visited the deep forest at night, the absence of lighting in the concert hall during the performance of this work is meant to allow you to enter into the “night forest” of the mind.

To enhance the effect of the musical sound space that I want to create, I use amplification to bring the audience closer to the instruments so that during quiet actions the instrument(s) will be heard in all of their intimacy and discreet voice.
