Notes on this piece
Trio 3 is an attempt to reinvent the piano, which with reference to keyboard instruments' history of origin is considered to be a mean for a single musician to depict choir music or a set of melody instruments playing together. The picture deviates from the pictured. First the piano has acoustic features of a percussion instrument. The sound is molded merely at the instance of its beginning.
A computer will play back a nine-part just intonation counterpoint based on the first fourteen notes of Gloria from Kyriale, Ordinarium 1 of the Gregorian Chant. Its spectra will be convolved with the signal from microphones oriented on the percussionists' instruments. Its audibility and timbre will thus depend on their playing. Hence the counterpoint will be outlined by the percussion instruments.
The piano will simultaneously play particles of the same counterpoint regarding to the mentioned notion of its traditional purpose. Thereby another alteration that happened ever since in the depiction of choir voices by keyboard instruments will take place: Intonation will be eliminated. The infinite pitch space of melody instruments will be replaced by a static grid of twelve points per octave.
