Keita Matsumiya

Born in Kyoto, Japan in 1980, Japanese composer Keita Matsumiya is a resident artist 2016/2017 at Casa de Velazquez of French government, as a member of Academy of France in Madrid, in Spain. Previously he was a member of Cursus de composition 2011/2012 at IRCAM, where he researched computer assisted music. His principal teachers there were Kiyoshi Furukawa, Masakazu Natsuda, Frédéric Durieux, Gérard Pesson, Luis Naon, Michael Levinas and Claude Ledoux. He received Bachelor of composition (2010) and Master of composition (2013), and obtained two Prises of composition and music analysis at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Before Paris, he studied musicology at Aichi University of the Arts and sound installation at the graduate school of Tokyo University of the Arts, where he received Master of Arts in 2006.

Matsumiya is a recipient of several honors. With his 2010 work La glace s’étoile, s’enchaîne for flute and harp, he was awarded Takefu Composition Award 2010 in Japan by jury Toshio Hosokawa and Mark André, and with his 2013 work Soliton for chamber orchestra and electronics, he was awarded honorable mention of Concours Destellos 2015 in Argentina. Other recent honors include two artistic residency fellowships from Institute Français Fez in Morocco and Tokyo Wonder Site, as well as a commission from Klangspuren Festival 2012 in Schwaz.

His catalog extends from instrumental-vocal music to mixed and electroacoustic music. In 2015, he received a commission from Dairakudakan, a prestigious dance company of Butoh in Tokyo, to write an electroacoustic stage piece entitled ASURA, and in 2017, a commission from Ensemble Regards in Paris with the support of SACEM for his choreographic-musical project, KARURA. His works have been performed by National Orchestra of Lorraine, Ensemble TIMF, Camerata Stravaganza, Musica Universalis, Ensemble Regards, Orchestra of Laureates of the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Paris, among others, and presented at renowned festivals such as: Festival Mixtur in Barcelona, Festival Klangspuren in Schwaz, Centre Achantes in Metz, International piano competition of Orléans, Brittany International Saxophone Academy, Tongyeong International Music Festival, Takefu International Music Festival and Ars Musica Festival in Brussels.

His scores are available at the Edition Tempéraments in Bordeaux. He works at Oita Prefectural College of Arts and Culture as Junior Associate Professor of Composition and part-time lecturer at Graduate school of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music.
