Notes on this piece Flying Ink is written for the Ball State University New Music Ensemble. It got its inspiration from one of the Ink Pine Finger Paintings by Ye Wenzhou from 1820 that is currently on the permanent collection in the David Owsley Museum of Art in Ball State University.
Ye Wenzhou was originally from the Fujian Province in China, and later relocated to Jiayi, Taiwan in the early 19th century. His ink paintings, following the traditional artistry in China, express an impression of a scene where the artist forms a particular state of mind rather than depict any realistic landscape. It is accompanied by a descriptive paragraph that links the artist’s emotional state verbally to the visual.
