The score was commissioned by the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory for the project “Europe through the eyes of Russians. Russia through the eyes of Europeans”, implemented with the financial support of the European Union.
I was always fascinated by the Russian artists and inventors like Roslavets, Lourié, Obukchov, Schillinger, Wyszniegradski, Kublin, Avraamov, Barnoff-Rossinée, Theremin, Golyshev, Kandinsky. I even have described and published some of them in my papers and articles (e.g. for Polish edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica). My newest discovery is Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944), one of the inventors of color photography. His series of color photographies from 1909 documenting the richness and diversity of the landscapes and peoples of his country is particularly inspiring for me.
I 'm going to find a musical expression for the three traces of my fascination: by the aesthetical beauty of his colour images, by the historical value of documented nature, ethnic diversity, handcraft and architecture of the vast country, as well as by the technical aspect of the method invented by Prokudin-Gorskii. He captured the images on three glass plate negatives and combined them with three color filters. It seems, or let me hope that the number 3 in the title of my piece will find a triple meaning in my music.
