The work is inspired by Aeschylus’ drama Oresteia, where Erinyes are hunting Orestes. In Greek mythology the Erinyes, also known as Furies, were female chthonic deities of vengeance; they were sometimes referred to as “infernal goddesses”.
The quartet takes shape from the basic elements of this story: the names of the three goddesses, the hunting (
Θήρα) and the Euphemism (in ancient greek the attempt of humans to calm the deities down in order to make them be more indulgent with their decisions).
