Partota II

Partota II is played on a master keyboard, from where the tones are sent partly to the acoustic computer grand piano (for example YAMAHA Disklavier) and partly to a microtonally tuned sampler with piano sound. A computer does the splitting. The grand piano is tuned to normal temperament. The sampler has a special tuning, see score. The tuning logic results from the interplay of harmonic, melodic and fingering requirements: In addition to a harmony that goes up to the 19th partial, extreme micro-intervals occur, i.e. tone steps down to 14 cents. The score gives hints to the sound in the upper staff.

I wrote time structures as a guide. Tempo indications are to be taken as approximate indications, as are all dynamic indications. What is important is that the timing is handled VERY FREELY beyond the rhythmic musical text. Fundamentally important, for example, in the "Chet Baker..." movement is a hidden blues/jazz feeling in the lines, and in the "Messiaen" section on p.21 there is a crazy bird song (due to distortions in the 16th notes, lots of caesuras, agglomerations of repeating groups. ..). The same applies to the "Nancarrow" part on p.30: Glissandi are very fast, then stopped sharply for the highlighted notes.

Despite many "machine-like" aspects, the PARTOTA II is intended to be played "musically", fast, lively and also melancholic. This may be a “Ligeti” link.
