The topic of this quartet is the contradiction between just, natural, simple intervals and the strangeness, if these intervals are superimposed.

ich trau´re ich klage um dich rufe deinen Namen schreie dich zu halten

we come to bury / the dead / again / and / again / and / again / with our little shovels /
wir kommen um die Toten wieder und wieder und wieder zu begraben mit unsern kleinen Schaufeln

and our watering cans / and our superfluous gestures / tapping / on the outer shell of the earth
und unsern Gießkännchen und unsern überflüssigen Gesten herumtappend auf der äußeren Erdschale
